RollingStone's Enemies of the Planet: Warren Buffett Heads the List

RollingStone has published an article on the individuals who are single-handedly posting the biggest threat to our planet.   It is an interesting list and includes:

  • Warren Buffett - the dubious number 1 spot who seems to be banking on the failure of the clean energy bills with huge investments tied to coal.
  • Rupert Murdoch -  #2 due to the Fox News propaganda machine.
  • Sen. James Inhofe - who proudly guarantees that the GOP will be able to block carbon curbing legislation and bemoaned not landing in the number 1 position on the RollingStone list.
  • George Will - for writing lie after lie in his column - thus using his reputation as the Conservative Intellectual to give credibility to disinformation.
  • John McCain - Flip-flopping to try and save his political life.

The common theme to the list seems to be age (most on the list are over 70, wtf - they don't need the planet that much longer?)... read more

UnGreen, UnKeen Celebrities

Celebrities, living in the spotlight, cannot get away with anything without getting caught by the paparazi!  While some famous people use their star power to promote environmental activism (such as Bono, Cameron Diaz, Jack Johnson, and more), others are infamously wasteful.

Pope Benedict Goes Green

Catholics Go Green

Pope Benedict XVI seems to be going green. The pontiff, head of the Catholic Church, issues a new encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth). An encyclical is a letter addressing some aspect of Catholic doctrine from the Pope to bishops and the general public. This latest encyclical, issued July 7, includes most noteworthy a call for sustainable development. "The Church has a responsibility towards creation..when "human ecology"is respected within society, environmental ecology also benefits." (p.51).

Chapter Four of Caritas in Veritate is a direct discourse on environmental issues, providing a theological argument for "creation care":... read more

Green Celebs: U2's Bono

If your looking for an environmental role model, Irish rockstar, Bono (born Paul David Hewson, May 10, 1960), of the band U2 is a good place to start.  Bono is well known for his humanitarianism, and has been called, "the face of fusion philanthropy" for his efforts to draw attention to issues such as global poverty, AIDS, and the environment. "I was taught that if my opinion was informed, then I had the right to express it and not be afraid who else was in the room," Bono said in a 2002 60 Minutes interview.

Green Celeb Bono

Bono's environmental work includes creating clothing line in 2005, EDUN, which works in developing countries to create sustainable business models, provide fair wages, practice good business ethics, without burdening the local environment.  He also participated in a tree planting ceremony in Tokyo Bay, Japan, in 2008, where efforts are being taken to turn a landfill into an 88 hectare forest.    Bono has also been active in the Greenpeace community  since 1993 when his entire band participated in a protest against a nuclear power plant, Sellafield, in England.   And of course, Bono is self-reported avid recycler and drives a car which runs on ethanol instead of gasoline.... read more

Green Celebs: Celebrity Quotes on the Environment

Green Celeb Sheryl Crow

Everyone knows that green is the new black, so, of course, many celebrities are jumping aboard the green bandwagon. And we are happy to have them! (Of course, some flaunt their organic fair trade cotton t-shirts while driving a gas guzzling SUV… this, we’re not so happy about…). This series is dedicated to famous people, from the courageous and commendable to the outrageous and deplorable!. What better way to kick off the series than with celebrity quotes?

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow on how small changes in our daily lifestyle can make a big difference:

“I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting—only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required."
