The benefits of hybrid commuter vehicles: electric bikes and tricycles

Electric bikes and tricycles have become environmentally responsible hybrid commuter vehicles with excellent mileage and very low operating costs - 3 miles per penny!

Both ebikes and tricycles might transform urban mobility, as more and more people take to them. As a replacement for short car rides, they emit minimal carbon dioxide, compared to a car ride, and help residents reduce their total carbon footprint. Image from Schwinn.com

In addition to environmental benefits, ebike lovers indicate 5 more reasons to prefer electric bike or trike:

1) Health benefits – Electric bikes enable people with temporary or long-term physical limitations to enjoy biking. Many ebike models offer simultaneous motor and pedal use for some degree of physical activity.2) Convenience – It’s always there for you and enables easy riding around town, running errands, and even shopping (it can fit a small load of grocery bags). Parking is never an issue. Some models fit child-seats or a trailer. For longer trips, most models are light and easily fit into an average car trunk.3) Money consideration - Cheaper than a car and you don’t need to pay for car insurance, taxes, and maintenance costs, even parking tickets. There are also considerations of rising gasoline prices.... read more

Contenders at Clean Tech Open Who Did Not Win

Electric Vehicles also mean bikes and tricycles

Tricycles for adults? Electric bikes as a replacement for cars?

Two and three wheel electric powered bikes, also referred to as ebikes, motorized bicycle or light electric vehicle (LEV), have been gaining popularity. The market for ebikes is growing faster than the one for cars and trucks and it's one of the booming Green sectors.

Motorized bicycles are powered by an electric motor (in the past, some used a small internal combustion engine) and they are distinguished from electric motorcycles and scooters by being capable of being powered by pedals alone, if required.

Electric bikes and tricycles have the potential to revolutionize transportation in our neighborhoods, places of work, and ‘going’ around town. A significant percentage of car rides are for short trips to local destinations, running errands, accessing your town’s shops or business districts, getting to medical appointments, riding to work, etc., often with only one person in the car.

Touted as a substitute to automobiles, electric bikes and trikes enable us to drive a car significantly less. In some cases it may replace a car altogether.

As a transportation mode, ebikes have a direct impact on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Automobiles contribute to air, water, and noise pollution. The motored bike’s footprint is so minor when compared to that of a midsize car, which creates thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in its manufacturing process and, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an additional 20 pounds per gallon is burned while driving.... read more

Clean Tech applications: Ride share and carpooling

Remember how hitchhiking was an accepted mode of transit in America years ago? Well, now we have ride sharing. With approximately ¾ of commuters driving alone to work in the U.S. every weekday, alternative transportation modes bring many benefits.

Ride sharing is a simple way to save money, reduce one’s carbon footprint, provide opportunities to network and expand one’s contacts, reduce driving stress, as well as pleasant. Find friends, neighbors, and co-workers who are traveling the same way you are – for school, work, events or leisure – and share a ride.

There are several variations of sharing transit: carpooling, where pool members use their own private cars. Ride-share also refers to members jointly share the costs of a rented car; or sharing a ride in a hired vehicle with a hired driver, like a shared taxi, shuttle, vanpools, etc.... read more

Do electric cars really help the environment? Are they 'green'?

Are hybrid and electric vehicles batteries a Green alternative or add hazardous chemicals to our landfills?

Visiting the West-Coast Green conference in San Francisco this past week confirmed the feel-good and coolness of electric vehicles. Photo from hybridcars.com: Photo from hybridcars.comPhoto from hybridcars.com: Photo from hybridcars.com

New developments in electric vehicle batteries

Safety concerns in the auto industry: electric vehicle (EV) batteries are going through a change.

The emergence of small lightweight and long-running lithium-based batteries has helped propel many technological products in several industries. Lithium-based batteries are used in portable electronic devices, such as laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, iPod, cameras, as well as, implantable electronic medical devices, and in electric vehicles.

Some environmentally conscience people are concerned that a hybrid bliss might turn into a toxic chaos, when today's hybrid vehicles batteries end up in landfills. With the development of hybrid cars, the evolvement of alternative batteries for the hybrid industry have re-opened the environmental debate about conventional car battery technology.

According to environmental researchers, there are many types of batteries, where some are very toxic and others are less: lead acid or nickel cadmium batteries have a harmful impact on the  environment. Then, the current batteries used in hybrids today, the nickel metal hydride, have a much lower toxicity level.... read more

Anxiety Abound With Electric Car Owners & GM Strategy

Good Clean Tech just ran a piece about the newest affliction of electric car owners.  No, it is not static shocks (even though this makes sense in my mind), but fear over the driving in excess of the range of the vehicle.

Chevy Volt, Electric Car

Avelion and Tokyo Electric Power Co. performed a survey on electric car drivers habits last year.  What it found was surprising. Drivers of electric vehicles are unwilling to push their cars to the limits, usually going less then half of the maximum distant on a full charge.  The study included a specific group of drivers and one charge station.  Some drivers were so worried about being stranded that they would not go over 10 miles from the nearest charging station.  As an additional charging station came online, drivers were willing to go much farther.... read more

Hybrid Cabs in Boston

Last year, the City of Boston ordered that all cabs must be converted to hybrids by 2015.  However, last April, taxi drivers sued the city over this and today the judge ruled that Boston cannot force cabbies to buy hybrids.

Currently, most of the taxis are refurbished police cars (mostly Crown Victorias) and cab owners are required to keep all cabs in their fleet under 6 years old.  The taxi drivers said that this ordinance could put them out of business and that they aren't against ultimately greening the fleet.... read more
