San Jose Solar: How Much Does it Cost?

San Jose California leads the nation in solar installation thanks in part due to the sunny weather and aggressive financial incentives. If you are like me and other San Jose area residents, solar installation seems like a grand idea but the cost is totally overwhelming.
The out-of-pocket cost for Solar in San Jose on the average 4-bedroom home (3-5kW system) ranges from $12k-$16k – this is after state and federal cash rebates and tax incentives. That sounds like a lot, but usually pays for itself in 5-7 years. Since systems usually have a 20-25 year warrantee you will get 15-20 years of virtually free electricity. You should also take into account the increase in home value (and this increase in home value is property tax exempt). If the cost is still a little bit out of reach, consider a state-sponsered solar loan, which offers a very low interest rate to help you finance your solar project.
I am totally intrigued by solar-powered anything – I love the idea that we can wean off our dependency on carbon-emitting energy sources and believe solar can be a reality sooner than many people think.
