Is Number 1 Plastic Recyclable?

IS plastic 1 recyclable        Is number 2 plastic recyclable

Yes, plastic #1 is recyclable. In fact, plastic number 1 is one of the most commonly recycled plastics out there. Number 1 plastic can be found in the form of plastic bottles (such as water and soda bottles) and disposable plastic packaging used for takeout.

Pretty much all municipal curbside recycling programs accept bottles and containers made from plastic #1. You can check on your local utility at Earth911.org/recycling as well as find a local center where you can drop off all of your number 1 plastic containers.

There are lots of great reuse and upcycle ideas for bottles and other things made from plastic #1. Here are just a few things you can do with empty water/soda bottles:

  1. Decorate them and use them for storage containers around the house.
  2. Fill them with beans or rice to make fun moraccas.
  3. Decoare them and put a slit on the side to make a piggy bank.
  4. Fill them 3/4 full with water and freeze them for an on-the-go ice pack.
  5. Use to start an herb garden or for starting seeds off before you plant them outside.
  6. Make your own "shrinky dinks."
  7. Make fun decorations such as these flowers.
  8. Tic-tac-toe game.
  9. Make a terrarium.
