Can I Compost Egg Shells?

There are different schools of thought on this.   Back when I posted my Beginner's Guide to Composting, I listed them as something that you can compost.  However, I later read something that says you shouldn't compost egg shells...and then after that, I read that they're an excellent thing to compost!

Here's the lowdown:

If you live in an area with a lot of wildlife, egg shells can be appealing to them.  Some folks have complained about bears getting into their compost after throwing egg shells into it.

Second, egg shells can have salmonella on them.  If you do decide to compost them, be sure to rinse them off first.

Lastly, egg shells break down very, very slowly...so should you decide to compost them, crush them up first.
