The blogosphere, Twitter, and Facebook feeds are ablaze today with messages directed to world leaders, demanding an end to the $775 billion in subsidies given to the fossil fuel industry. (And, yes, Billion with a “B”) Later this week, leaders from 150 nations will gather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Earth Summit. Formally called the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the goal of this conference is to bring together world leaders, NGOs, and communities from around the globe to discuss issues related to creating a more sustainable environment.

Today environmentalists are rallying together via social media to make their voices heard: End the $775 billion subsidies given to oil, gas, and coal companies every year. Year after year, cities are cutting salaries for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and public health workers. Subsidies and grants for sustainable programs are becoming harder to obtain. And our national unemployment is at 8.2% (and we all know that’s a gross understatement). Yet oil, gas, and coal companies, who see high profits year over year continue to receive billions in subsidies.

Ironically, subsidies to fossil fuel companies have TRIPLED since the 2009 G-20 summit when leaders pledged to eliminate all such subsidies by 2019 (according to the Natural Resources Defense Council).

In a Huffington Post article from today, actor Robert Redford puts it simply and powerfully:

We should not be subsidizing the destruction of our planet. Fossil fuels are literally cooking our planet, polluting our air and draining our wallets. Why should we continue to reward companies to do that?

As they go after more expensive and harder to access fossil fuels, it is like drilling a hole in our pocketbooks. We pay more at the pump. We pay in taxpayer subsidies to a highly profitable industry. And we pay in the rising costs of climate change in the form of floods, storms and droughts that hurt our homes and communities.

…and adds:

Think about what else we could do with one trillion dollars. We could create clean energy jobs, limit greenhouse gas emissions that create climate change and help make a healthier and more secure life for our children.

All in all, fossil fuel companies receive over 12 times more subsidize money than clean energy companies (such as wind and solar). We know that for every dollar invested in clean energy, 3 new jobs are created, while money funneled to fossil fuel companies continue to shrink our struggling economy.
