Green Celebs: Celebrity Quotes on the Environment

Everyone knows that green is the new black, so, of course, many celebrities are jumping aboard the green bandwagon. And we are happy to have them! (Of course, some flaunt their organic fair trade cotton t-shirts while driving a gas guzzling SUV… this, we’re not so happy about…). This series is dedicated to famous people, from the courageous and commendable to the outrageous and deplorable!. What better way to kick off the series than with celebrity quotes?

Singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow on how small changes in our daily lifestyle can make a big difference:

“I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming. Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating. I propose a limitation be put on how many squares of toilet paper can be used in any one sitting—only one square per restroom visit, except, of course, on those pesky occasions where two to three could be required." (

The late comedian George Carlin’s quirky parody of “America, America” highlights some of our country’s not-so-green practices:

Oh, Beautiful for smoggy skies, in-sec-it-cided grain. For strip-mined mountain’s majesty above the asphalt plain. America, America, man sheds his waste on thee. And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea.” (

Elizabeth Hurley, actress, comments on growing organic produce. Now if only we all could have private farms - share your yummy organic eggs with us, Liz!

"I converted my farm into organic status. I grow all of my own crops and have my own livestock." (

Actor and self-proclaimed environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio talks about global warming and the future of our planet:

“Global warming is not only the number one environmental challenge we face today, but one of the most important issues facing all of humanity… We all have to do our part to raise awareness about global warming and the problems we as a people face in promoting a sustainable environmental future for our planet.” (

Actress Jennifer Aniston does whatever she can do:

“I take a three-minute shower. I even—brush my teeth while in the shower.” (

Founder of CNN and famous news mogul, Ted Turner, is cynical about the future of our environment:

“I'd say the chances are about 50-50 that humanity will be extinct or nearly extinct within 50 years. Weapons of mass destruction, disease, I mean this global warming is scaring the living daylights out of me.” (

Ed Begley, Jr., an environmental role model for all, and star of the reality show Living with Ed on Green Planet TV, comments on the hypocrisy of carbon offsets:

“If you’re going to drive around in a big ol’ Hummer and then buy carbon offsets to mitigate that, that’s like getting drunk on the ends and throwing some money through the window of an AA meeting and thinking you’re doing something.” (

Paris Hilton (heiress, singer, reality TV star, author, designer… did I miss anything?) on hybrid cars (funny, it seems when I see pictures of her, she is always in an SUV or a superstretch limo…):

“Driving hybrid cars is the new way to go. Anyone can do it, no matter how old." (

Actor Robert Redford on the importance of focusing our national agenda on the environment:

"I think the environment should be put in the category of our national security. Defense of our resources is just as important as defense abroad. Otherwise what is there to defend?" (

Green Celeb George Clooney

Forty-eight year old award winning actor/ heartthrob George Clooney is realistic about his impact on the environment:

"You don't want to be a spokesperson unless you are absolutely committed to a cause because you can hurt it. I've been asked to help represent environmental groups. I'm a big proponent of cleaning up the environment. I have two electric cars. But I also have a big weak spot because I've flown on private jets.” (

Actor-turned-politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger urges:

"We simply must do everything we can in our power to slow down global warming before it is too late. The science is clear. The global warming debate is over." (

To musician John Mayer, it is most important to take things small:

“No thinking about ‘offsetting your carbon footprint’. No rallies. No brow-beating people who think the Earth just has a fever. Pick one thing to change this year, and keep the rest of your life the same.” (

Wow, Ted Turner's outlook is

Wow, Ted Turner's outlook is rather grim!!

Ted Turner was ahead of the "green" game, though, with his popular 90s cartoon "CAPTAIN PLANET!"

Another step....

While some people take a cynical attitude towards celebrities taking up causes, I think it's a great thing. It's just another step towards the importance of preserving our environment seeping into our national consciousness, everyday living and daily activities.

Paris Hilton....

She really has no clue.  But George Clooney.... Oh so dreamy.  Am I right Michelle?
