Celebrity Solar: Who's Putting Their Money Where Their Mouth Is (...and who's not...)
Many celebrities hopped on the Prius bandwagon a few years back. But, let's face it: with the type of money many of them are making, celeb environmental efforts should go further than a few gallons of gas per year. So, who's walking the walk by installing solar on their 7-bedroom-6-bath-2-pool Hollywood hills home?
Johnny Depp: Johnny Depp's private island (yes, island) is completely solar powered.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie: Brangelina's Lousianna home has PV solar power. Now if only they could save some jet-fuel by not flying across the country twice a week.
Cate Blanchett: The Lord of The Rings star's Australian home is entirely off-grid, powered completely by PV solar panels.
Daryl Hannah: This actress' Rocky Mountains home is completely off the grid. She receives all of her electrical power from the solar panels. Additionally. Daryl has a biodiesel car, powered by recycled cooking oil.
Edward Norton: Mr. Norton has installed solar panels on his sunny California home, and is helping less privileged families do the same. Norton's non-profit BP Solar Homes donates a solar system to a low-income family in California every time a celebrity installs solar.
Orlando Bloom: This London-based actor has solar on his city home.
Woody Harrelson: Harrelson lives in Hawaii in a community that is entirely solar-powered. Way to get off the grid by promoting community activism, Woody!!
Leonardo DiCaprio: It is no surprise that Hollywood leading man Leo diCaprio has gone solar – he has been very active in environmental activism over the past decade.
Al Gore: After Releasing An Inconvenient Truth in 2008, the former VP received a lot of slack for the amount of energy used to power his 10,000 square foot home. Since then Mr. Gore has gone solar.
Are you wondering which star mansions are eating up electricity? Stars such as Paris Hilton, Hayden Panitierre, Tom Cruise, Tiger Woods, and Jennifer Anistons have huge wasted rooftops that could decrease carbon emissions much more than the small 4kW residential systems. Come on, Ms. Aniston. We know you are worth $110 mill. Fork it out.
